Baseball Falls To Wildcats To End Season

ATLANTA – The Jackson State baseball team lost a heartbreaking 12-11 game to Bethune-Cookman Thursday and saw the season come to an end at the SWAC Tournament.

Daniel Bannon went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Ty Hill and Bret Mersman had three hits apiece for Jackson State in the 17-hit attack. Jatavis Melton, Marcus Atterberry, and Cesar Saavedra each had two hits.

Trailing 8-3 after two innings, the Tigers chipped away, scoring runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 8-7. Erick Gonzalez shut out the Wildcats from the third through seventh innings to aid the JSU comeback.

Jackson State regained the lead in the eighth. Daniel Bannon led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on a single by Hill. Atterberry then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Bannon to tie the score. With two outs, Hill scored on a throwing error to give JSU a 9-8 lead.

After Bethune-Cookman scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score, Jackson State regained the lead in the ninth. With one out, Saavedra singled to third and advanced to second on a throwing error on the play. Jatavis Melton then tripled to center field, scoring Saavedra. Bannon then singled up the middle, scoring Melton for an 11-9 lead. However, Bethune-Cookman scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win.
