JSU Drops Home Matchup to ULM

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State soccer team lost a heartbreaker at home to the University of Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon. The Tigers scored first in the match but fell 2-1.

"We are disappointed to lose because not only have we massively narrowed the previously existing gap between us and the non-conference teams, but we are good enough to win every time we step on the pitch," said Tigers head coach Ted Flogaites. "We had a perfectly good goal disallowed, but we're getting close to our top level and we are taking some big steps to get there. We are much further along at this stage than we were last year and we are only getting better."

Freshman Amalia Fonua put the Tigers on the board first just before the half.

How it Happened

Jackson State (1-3) started the scoring when Amalia Fonua scored her first goal of the season at the 34:32 minute mark. ULM (5-0) took back-to-back shots to open the match as JSU's Jordan Hamilton registered a save. Sage Magruder took a shot but was unlucky in her attempt. Kendyl Terrell took a chance on the goal at 39:50, but Mickaela Leal picked up the save as the Tigers went into the half with the 1-0 advantage.

Roughly five minutes into the second half, the Warhawks evened the game on a goal from Skylar Blaise at 50:49. Magruder attempted to give the Tigers the lead at 79:30 but Alexa Castro Vivas got the save. Blaise scored again at the 81:49 mark to give the Warhawks the 2-1 go ahead. ULM held on to its lead as JSU fell 2-1 in the match.
