Men’s Hoops to Host Texas Southern on ESPNU

Jackson, Miss. - The Jackson State men's basketball team will welcome the Tigers of Texas Southern University to campus for an ESPNU broadcast that will tip off at 8 p.m. at the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center. 

The Tigers (7-10, 3-1 SWAC) will play their third home game of the season as they look to bounce back after a tough 62-71 loss at the hands of Prairie View A&M. 

Texas Southern (5-11, 3-2 SWAC) comes into the game after winning three of their last five games, including the last two against Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State.  

 Jackson State vs. Texas Southern
  • This will be the 102nd meeting between the Tigers and Texas Southern. The only other team that Jackson State has faced more than TSU is Southern, which they have played 106 times.  
  • Texas Southern leads the all-time series 57-44, and the Tigers have only won two games in the last ten meetings. 
  • Jackson State has won the last two meetings in the series played in Jackson. 
  • The Tigers are 5-3 at home in the last 20 meetings but are just 6-14 overall in the same number of games. 
  • The games against Texas Southern will be just the third game that the Tigers have played at home this season after starting the season on the road to open the 2023-24 season. 

Last Meeting | Tigers 71, Texas Southern 69
  • The Jackson State men's basketball team hit 4 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 40 percent from deep in a 71-69 win against the Texas Southern Tigers at home Saturday.
  • Coltie Young had 19 points, which led the Tigers (10-18, 9-6), who had three players score in double figures. Romelle Mansel added 13 points, and Zeke Cook chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
  • After falling behind 16-13, Jackson State went on a 16-0 run with 12:34 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Treyon Johnson, to take a 29-16 lead. The Tigers lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 37-29 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 37 points close to the basket.
  • The Tigers then held on for the victory in the second half. Jackson State got out on the break in the period, scoring eight fast break points.

Scouting the Tigers  
  • Texas Southern has won three of its last five games, including the last two. 
  • In his sixth season leading Texas Southern, Johnny Jones and his Tigers were picked to finish at the league's top. 
  • TSU averages 66.2 points per game while allowing 72.8, for a difference of 6.6 points per game. They are also averaging 36.4 rebounds per game. 
  • Texas Southern is third in the SWAC in scoring, first in blocks, and third in defensive scoring.
  • In SWAC games, they outscored their opponents by seven points. They are being outrebounded by 1.4 per game. 
  • PJ Henry leads the team, averaging 12.6 points per game, and Jonathan Cisse averages 10.6 points while leading the team in assists.

Evans Chasing 1000 Points
  • Ken Evans Jr. leads the Tigers, averaging 18.6 points per game while shooting over 40 percent from the floor and beyond the 3-point arc.  
  • Evans saw his streak of double-digit scoring end after scoring just six points against Houston in early December. He has now scored double figures in each game he has played except two games this season and has scored 20 or more points on eight different occasions, including on the road against ranked Gonzaga.
  • Evans has scored 317 points this season and is now just six points away from becoming yet another Jackson State great to score at least 1000 points in his career. He will join such greats as Lindsey Hunter, Audie Norris, Grant Maxey, Jeffery Hart and Trey Johnson
  • He is second in the SWAC in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage (42.9), and ninth in defensive rebounding (3.76).

Chase is About Sharing 
  • Chase Adams is one of the best point guards in the country, and he can play with the best of them. 
  • He has recorded 75 assists in the short season and 193 assists in his two years at Jackson State. 
  • He is currently averaging 4.4 assists per game. 
  • His season-high is eight, and he recorded that against Alcorn State on Saturday, Jan. 6.
  • Adams is on pace to crack the top 10 assists leaders list. Marino Walker is 10th with 271 assists.
  • Adams is second in the SWAC assist/turnover ratio (2.14) and second in assists (4.4). 

O'Neal Coming into His Own
  • O'Neal is in his first season with the Tigers after transferring from Alabama State last season. 
  • During his time with the Hornets, he scored 508 points, had 95 blocks, 45 steals, 52 assists, and 390 rebounds while shooting 63.4 percent from the floor. He shot 50 percent from the floor in 2022-23 while at Alabama State. 
  • He is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting over 60 percent from the floor. He scored a career-high 24 points against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 17. 
  • O'Neal is just nine rebounds away from 500 career rebounds.
  • He is ninth in the SWAC in rebounding, first in blocked shots (1.5), and tied for fifth in offensive rebounds (2.2).

Tiger Tails
  • Coach Mo is in his third year as head coach and his second at Jackson State, his hometown. Born in Jackson, Miss.
  • Williams attended Murrah High School, where he had a successful career, earning him a scholarship to Alabama. 
  • In his first year at Jackson State, he went 12-6 in SWAC play despite being picked to finish seventh. 
  • Coach Williams is 1-4 all-time against Texas Southern and holds a 1-1 record against the Tigers since taking over at Jackson State. 
  • The Tigers are third in the SWAC in 3-point field goal percentage (32.2), second in rebounds (36.5), fourth in rebound margin (-1.4), fourth in assists (12.6), fourth in blocked shots (3.7), and second in offensive rebounds (12.7).
