Men’s Hoops Host Alcorn State to Open SWAC Play

1/4/2024 4:12:00 PM

JACKSON - The Jackson State men's basketball team will play their home opener on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Braves of Alcorn State to town. This game will also be the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener for both teams and will tip off at 2:35 p.m. and be streamed live on HBCUGo.

The Hall of Famer Charlie Neal will have the call, along with Tim Scarborough, for the men's game on HBCUGo.

Ken Evans Jr. leads the Tigers (4-9) with an average of 18.5 points per game. They will play their first home game after the first 15 games of the season on the road. Jackson State comes into the game averaging 66.8 points per game and 36.1 rebounds.

The Alcorn State (1-12) record doesn't tell the story of the team they have finished atop the SWAC the last two seasons. Jeremiah Kendell, one of three Braves who average double-digit scoring along with Byron Joshua (11.8) and Jeremiah Gamrell (11.1), leads them, and they are third in the SWAC in 3-point field goal percentage. The Braves come into the game after losing there last 11 games.

  • Jackson State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 42-25 heading into halftime.

The Tigers could not cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 75-60. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 35 total points.

  • The Tigers have scored 240 points off the bench, an average of 18.4 points per game from bench players. Jackson State has scored 20 points or more in five games this season and scored in double figures in each game except one.

Tough Slate

  • Jackson State played two teams currently ranked in the top 25, #3/2 Houston and #15/16 Gonzaga, both on the road.
