Tigers cruise to exhibition victory over Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. | Jayme Mitchell Jr. led five players in double figures as Jackson State pulled away from Belhaven 93-52 in its exhibition opener at the Lee E. Williams AAC on Thursday night.
 
Mitchell led the way for Jackson State with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor (including three three-pointers), while Keiveon Hunt added 14 points and five assists in the win. Jalen Tatum added 13 points, Dylan Canoville 12 points and five rebounds, and Dorian McMillian 10 for the Tigers.
 
Jackson State finished the night shooting 50.0 (28-of-56) percent from the floor and 43.8 (7-of-16) percent from beyond the arc in the win. They also shot 81.1 (30-of-37) percent from the free throw line in the win. Meanwhile, Belhaven shot just 25.0 (16-of-64) percent from the floor and just 20.0 (4-of-5) percent from the free throw line.
 
How It Happened
  • Jackson State jumped out to an early 20-5 lead in the first half with 13:44 remaining in the opening stanza on a Canoville lay-up forcing a Belhaven timeout.
  • The Tigers extended the lead with a 14-5 run to take a 34-10 lead on a pair of Canoville free throws.
  • The lead stayed around for the remainder of the first half.
  • Jackson State extended the lead in the second half to as many as 41 with just 19 seconds left and used a 14-0 run in the second half to pull away.
