JACKSON, Miss.| Jackson State women's basketball team held Mississippi University for Women to just 15 percent shooting from the field and the Tigers knocked off the Owls 93-36 at home Saturday.
The Tigers had five players score in double figures, led by Diaka Berete, who had 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Zaria Glover tacked on 17 points and eight rebounds from the bench and Shalance Montoya chipped in as well with 15 points and seven rebounds from the bench.
Jackson State out-rebounded Mississippi University for Women 54-24 in Saturday's game, led by 11 boards from Arianna Durrell. The Tigers also grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and scored 22 second chance points.
Jackson State's defense held Mississippi University for Women to only 10.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 15 percent from the field. The Tigers also limited Calysia Phillips to 1-of-8 shooting from downtown and five points in the game.
How It Happened
- After jumping out to a 9-7 advantage, Jackson State went on a 7-0 run with 5:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Glover, to increase its lead to 16-7.
- The Tigers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 27-14 advantage.
- Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 27 points close to the basket.
- JSU built that first quarter lead to 33-16 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:23 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Montoya, to increase its lead to 39-16.
- The Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 45-20 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 18 points close to the basket.
- Following intermission, Jackson State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 54-25 before going on a 10-0 run to expand its lead further to 64-25 with 3:59 to go in the third.
- Before the third period was over, the Tigers added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 73-30 edge.
- JSU played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 28 points in the paint.
- Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Tierney Kelsey's layup, to grow the lead to 93-36 with 56 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
- The Tigers took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 18 of its 20 points in the paint.
