Tigers return to action Saturday at California Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. | Jackson State returns to action following a week on the road Saturday night against California Baptist at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center with tip set for 5 p.m. (PT).

The Tigers and California Baptist have met three times in school history with the Lancers winning all three of those contests dating back to 2019. The two teams met last year with the Lancers winning 80-66 back on November 10, 2023.

Jackson State, who has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation with three games against top-10 programs, closes out the non-conference schedule with the game. It also marks the 13th consecutive game on the road this season for Jackson State who will close out its road trip with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener against Alcorn State on Jan. 4.

Jayme Mitchell Jr. leads Jackson State in scoring at 12.3 points per game while grabbing 4.8 rebounds. He is shooting 35.8 (43-of-120) percent from the floor and 34.3 (23-of-67) percent from beyond the arc. He also shoots 74.3 (26-of-35) percent from the free throw line. Romelle Mansel is averaging 9.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while shooting 33.0 (32-of-97) percent from the floor. Dorian McMillian is third on the team in scoring at 9.2 points per game while shooting 36.5 (42-of-115) percent from the floor and 32.7 (17-of-52) percent from beyond the arc.

Game Notes

  • The Tigers have yet to suit up every player on the roster in a game this season as Marcus Watson Jr. and Daeshun Ruffin missed the games this weekend (while Avaughn Johnson has not dressed this season).
  • Mansel recorded a career-high 17 rebounds against Arkansas State and he is just five shy of 500 career rebounds, he was named to the All-Tournament Team last weekend after his performance in El Paso. Over the course of the weekend, Mansel averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, including a 17-point, six-rebound game against UTEP.
  • Although his minutes were limited last weekend in El Paso, Shannon Grant reached a milestone during a career that has stops at Mercer, Florida A&M, and now Jackson State. The graduate student played in his 100th game against Akron on Saturday in the consolation game in El Paso.
  • Jackson State has played 12 games this season, however, they have not dressed their entire team for a single game yet in 2024. The Tigers have started eight different lineups through the first 12 games with several players missing multiple games throughout the season - Johnson (12), Ruffin (10), Keiveon Hunt (7), and Watson (3) to mention some.
  • The game marks the only trip out west for the Tigers this season returning to the home state of Mansel and Delyle Williams, and also to the state where Mo Williams began his coaching career (assistant at Cal State Northridge).
