JSU wraps up non-conference schedule at Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 25-point performance from the bench, but fell 90-51 to Missouri on the road Sunday afternoon in its final nonconference game of the season.

Leianya Massenat registered seven points and two steals in the game. Tierney Kelsey added nine points and four assists off of the bench and Taleah Dilworth chipped in as well with 11 points.

Led by Shalance Montoya's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State pulled down 17 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.

The JSU defense was a problem in Sunday's game, forcing 13 Missouri turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Massenat's two steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (2-9) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-7 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 46-19 halftime deficit.
  • JSU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 69-30 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Jackson State scored six of its 11 points in the paint.
  • The Tigers narrowed its deficit to 71-33 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Dilworth's layup, to shrink the deficit to 71-38 with 7:41 to go in the contest.
  • Missouri responded and outscored JSU the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 90-51.
  • Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

Inside the Numbers 

  • The Jackson State shot 74.1 percent (15-for21) from the free throw line and 16-for-61 (26.2 percent) from the field.
  • JSU finished with 25 bench points, 18 points in the paint, 13 points off of 13 Missouri turnovers, nine second chance points and five fast break points.
  • The Tigers were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording seven blocks as a team.
  • Jackson State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 17 offensive boards in the game.
  • Taleah Dilworth led the Tigers with 11 points.
  • JSU got a team-high eight rebounds from Shalance Montoya.
