Houston -- Isaiah Williams was dominant on Saturday, punching out 13 Alcorn State hitters over six innings of work to help lead the Jackson State Tigers past the Braves 11-5 at Minute Maid Park in the 2024 Cactus Jack HBCU Classic.
In addition to his 13 strikeouts, Williams (1-0) threw six shutout innings while giving up five hits and walking three for Jackson State (1-1).
Outfielder Joseph Eichelberger led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple, three walks, and two RBIs. Rodney Hibler put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. Freshman Davione Hull also chipped in, going 1-for-4 for Jackson State with a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers started the scoring early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Hibler came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
Jackson State held the Braves scoreless before getting back on the board in the top half of the second inning. Jackson State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Eichelberger, which brought the Tigers lead to 4-0.
JSU held Alcorn State without a run before building their lead to 6-0 in the sixth inning. With a run-scoring double from Hibler, the Tigers scored two runs off of Alcorn State pitching.
Jackson State held the Braves scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. Sebastian Cabeza and Myles White each scored a run for the Tigers in the inning, bringing the score to 8-0 in favor of Jackson State.
Alcorn State got within 8-3 until the Tigers scored again in the eighth inning to stretch their lead to 11-3. Jackson State scored three runs in the frame, coming by a two-run single off the bat of Eichelberger. The Braves put two runs on the scoreboard before the game ended, but the Tigers still coasted to an 11-5 win.
