LORMAN, Miss.| Angel Jackson and Areyanna Hunter each scored in double figures to lead the Jackson State women's basketball team to a 62-54 victory ove Alcorn State on the road Saturday.
Jackson finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Hunter tacked on 13 points and two steals. Miya Crump registered nine points and five rebounds while Ti'lan Boler added nine points and two steals.
Jackson State forced 17 Alcorn State turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Saturday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hunter's two steals led the way for Jackson State.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 9-8, Jackson State (19-6, 14-0 SWAC) on a 5-0 run with 1:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Laila Walker, to take a 13-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
- Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
- Alcorn State fought back to tie the game at 17-17 before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:17 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Ti'Ian Boler, to take a 23-17 lead.
- The Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 28-20 advantage heading into halftime.
- JSU was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.
- Jackson State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jackson, to expand its lead further to 34-22 with 7:34 to go in the third.
- Before the conclusion of the third period, the Braves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 36-28 edge.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
- JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Miya Crump's jumper, to grow the lead to 43-31 with 7:35 to go in the contest.
- The Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-54 win.
- The Tigers pulled down two offensive rebounds to score four second chance points out of 26 total in the period
