Jackson State Never Trails in 10-1 win over Florida A&M to Open Three-Game Series

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 10-1 win against the Florida A&M Rattlers on Friday afternoon to open the three-game SWAC series.

Victoria Salazar (9-3) got the win for Jackson State (17-7, ). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State (17-7, 5-1 SWAC) got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • JSU managed to push across two runs in the inning.
  • The Rattlers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Tigers expanded their advantage in the third.
  • The Jackson State offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Jace Jackson, which brought the score to 9-1 in favor of the Tigers.
  • Jackson State held Florida A&M scoreless before expanding their lead to 10-1 the following inning.
  • The score remained 10-1 for the rest of the game, as Jackson State coasted to the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed seven runs across.
  • JSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
  • Samiyyah Huckabee and senior Jalia Hubbard stole two bases in Friday's game.
  • The Tigers swiped eight bases as a team.
  • Jackson State went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
  • JSU's pitchers faced 21 Florida A&M hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out one.
  • The Tigers drew six walks from Florida A&M pitching.
  • Jackson led the Tigers at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
  • Florida A&M was led offensively by freshman Nyomi Jones, who went 2-for-3.
  • Zoryana Hughes led the Rattlers pitching staff, throwing 1.1 innings of two-run ball.

The Tigers will close out the series against Florida A&M with a doubleheader at the JSU Softball Field beginning Saturday morning. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. with game two to follow at 1:00 p.m.
