Jackson State Completes Season Sweep of UAPB at Home

JACKSON, Miss.| Five Tigers scored in double figures and Jackson State knocked off the UAPB Golden Lions 82-67 at home Thursday.

The Tigers had five players score in double figures, led by Angel Jackson, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Andriana Avent tacked on 14 points and two steals off the bench and Miya Crump helped out with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Led by Crump's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 20 boards that resulted in 21 second chance points.

The Jackson State defense held UAPB shooters to just 34.9 percent from the field, including 21.7 percent from three-point range. The Tigers also kept Zaay Green to 5-of-22 shooting in the game.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State (22-6, 17-0SWAC) went on a 13-0 run with 9:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Ti'Ian Boler, to take a 13-2 lead.
  • The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-18 advantage.
  • Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
  • JSU built that first quarter lead to 36-31 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 1:48 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Avent, to increase its lead to 45-31, a score that would hold until halftime. Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 20 of its 24 points close to the basket.
  • Following intermission, Jackson State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-42 before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Keshuna Luckett, to expand its lead further to 67-42 with 26 seconds to go in the third.
  • Before the third period was over, the Tigers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 69-43 edge.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 24 points in the paint.
  • JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 82-67 with 56 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
  • Jackson State pulled down seven offensive rebounds to score five second chance points out of 13 total in the period

Inside the Numbers
 

  • Jackson State shot 72.9 percent (30-for-70) from the field and 72 percent (10-for-25) from the free throw line.
  • The Tigers finished with 46 points in the paint, 21 second chance points, 19 bench points, 16 fast break points, 15 points off of 13 UAPB turnovers.
  • UAPB shot 22-for-63 (34.9 percent) from the field and 18-for-30 (60 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Coriah Beck led UAPB with 20 points and five rebounds.
  • Zaay Green listed with 16 points, followed by Kaila Walker who finished with 14 points.
  • The Golden Lions finished with 24 points in the paint, 24 points off of 15 JSU turnovers, 16 fast break points, 12 second chance points and seven bench points.
