Williams throws 9 K's in Tigers 10-5 win over Butler

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Junior Isaiah Williams was mowing people down on Saturday, punching out nine Butler hitters over six innings of work to help power the Jackson State Tigers over the Bulldogs 10-5.

In addition to his nine strikeouts, Williams tossed six innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits and walking three for Jackson State (11-4). Junior Je-Andrick Lourens (1-1) also made an impact on the mound for the Tigers, throwing four innings, giving up one run on two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Senior Rodney Hibler Jr., who went 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs on the day, led the Tigers at the plate. Junior Sebastian Cabeza compiled a standout day as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Junior Jordan McCladdie also chipped in for Jackson State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Tigers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. McCladdie came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.

The Tigers kept the deficit at 2-1 before tying the score in the fifth. Senior Davione Hull came across to score the lone run of the inning for JSU, which evened the score at 2-2.

That 2-2 tie turned into a 4-2 Jackson State lead in the sixth. The Tigers picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Cabeza.

The Bulldogs gained ground, closing the gap to 4-3 until Jackson State added some insurance in the eighth. The Tigers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Myles White, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Jackson State.

Butler came back to tie the ballgame at five before the Tigers reclaimed a 10-5 advantage in the eleventh inning. The Jackson State offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Hibler Jr.. The score remained 10-5 for the rest of the game, as the Tigers coasted to the win.

The Tigers will play their final game in the Inaugural Grind City Classic when they face host Memphis on Sunday, March 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be played at FedEx Park Avron Fogelman Field.
