James and Williams Put up Double-doubles Against Northwestern State on the Road

NATCHITOCHES, La.| Jayden James and Alexis Williams each notched double-doubles in Jackson State's road match at Northwestern State. The Tigers' tremendous effort to battle back from a 2-1 deficit wasn't enough as JSU lost 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15) on the road Tuesday evening at Prather Coliseum.

 Williams finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, and James registered 17 kills and 14 digs. Jordan Jones added nine kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Trinity Bryant chipped in for with 20 digs to go with nine blocks from Jones.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (2-2) found itself in an early deficit, losing the first set 25-21.
  • Northwestern State (3-1) grabbed the advantage for good at 21-20 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Demons took over in the second half of the stanza.
  • JSU got on the board first in the second set with a kill for Jones.
  • The Tigers survived a furious Northwestern State rally, hanging on to win after leading by seven points at 13-6 earlier in the set.
  • Jackson State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking seven Northwestern State attacks in the stanza.
  • JSU dropped the third set, putting the  Tigers in a 2-1 deficit.
  • The Tigers dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set 25-21.
  • Jackson State then responded to win set four 25-19 to force a fifth set.
  • The Tigers trailed by as many as six points, but took the lead for good at 12-11 in a set that had just one lead change before JSU took over the lead.
  • Jackson State's fourth-set win came in a stanza where they hit .300.
  • JSU got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Northwestern State attacks in the stanza.
  • The Tigers came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but dropping the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-12, to fall in the match.
  • JSU couldn't hang on in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied nine times.
  • Neither team led by more than three points in the set.

Inside the Numbers

  • Jackson State had three players finish in double figures in digs.
  • James and Williams each added two aces to go along with thier double-doubles.
  • JSU's attackers were helped by a team-high 27 assists from Karys Dove.
  • Jones recorded nine blocks and nine kills in the match.
Up Next
The Tigers will travel to Southern Illinois to compete in the Saluki Bash over the weekend. JSU will face Southern Illinois Friday at 10 a.m. and Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m. Jackson State will close out the tournament with a match up with Memphis Saturday at 11 a.m.
