Tigers move to 2-0 in conference play with home win

JACKSON, Miss. | Dorian McMillian led four players in double figures to lead Jackson State to its second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory, 77-70 over Alabama State at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center on Saturday night.

McMillian scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor (all three-pointers) and connected on a pair of free throws. He also finished with seven rebounds and a pair of steals in the win. Romelle Mansel narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds (including three offensive), while Daeshun Ruffin added 11 including going 6-for-6 from the line.

Dylan Canoville added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench, and Tamarion Hoover grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

Amarr Knox led Alabama State with 24 points to pace three players in double figures. CJ Hines finished with 14 points and Micah Simpson scored 11 points, while Micah Octave grabbed 10 rebounds.

Inside the Numbers
The Tigers 46.2 (24-of-52) percent from the floor and 50.0 (11-of-22) percent from beyond the arc for the game. They also shot 66.7 (18-of-27) percent from the free throw line. In the first half, Jackson State shot 41.4 (12-of-29) percent from the floor and 53.3 (8-of-15) percent from beyond the arc. They shot 55.6 (5-of-9) percent from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.

They finished the second half shooting 52.2 (12-of-23) percent from the floor and 42.9 (3-of-7) percent from beyond the arc. Thet Tigers also shot 72.2 (13-of-18) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State finished the night shooting 43.1 (28-of-65) percent from the floor and 28.0 (7-of-25) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 46.7 (7-of-15) percent from the free throw line. The Hornets shot 43.3 (13-of-30) percent from the floor in the first half and 27.3 (3-of-11) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 85.7 (6-of-7) percent from the free throw line in the opening half. They shot 42.9 (15-of-35) percent from the floor and 28.6 (4-of-14) percent from beyond the arc while shooting 12.5 (1-of-8) percent from the free throw line.

Jackson State won the rebounding battle 37-36 and assisted on 14 of the 24 made baskets on the night led by Mansel and Ruffin with five assists.

Game Notes

  • A pair of freshmen had career nights for Jackson State with McMillian scoring 23 points and Hoover grabbing 10 rebounds. The double-digit rebounding from Hoover is the fourth time this season a Tiger has recorded double-digit rebounds, with two from Shannon Grant and one from Mansel.
  • Mansel was one rebound shy of his first double-double of the season.
  • The Tigers started the same lineup for the second consecutive game, winning both in conference action and the game on Saturday was the first game at home this season for Jackson State.
  • The win by Jackson State over Alabama State is the third consecutive for head coach Mo Williams against his former school.
