Jackson State closes out road swing against Texas Southern on Monday

HOUSTON, Texas | Jackson State faces Texas Southern on Monday afternoon inside the H&PE Arena to close out the Texas road swing in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.

The game is set to tip at 3 p.m., moving from it's original 7 p.m. tip time due to weather.

Jackson State (4-13, 4-0 SWAC) sits half a game behind conference leader Southern through the first two weeks of the season after winning four consecutive conference games. They also sit one game ahead of Texas Southern (4-13, 3-1 SWAC) after a win over Alcorn State on Saturday in Houston.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 15.4 points per game after scoring in double figures in six of seven games he has played this season. Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 35.0 (55-of-157) percent from the floor and 36.3 (33-of-91) percent from beyond the arc, and Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.1 points per game while shooting 39.7 (62-of-156) percent from the floor and 39.7 (29-of-73) percent from beyond the arc. 

Romelle Mansel and Keiveon Hunt are averaging 9.5 points per game for the Tigers.

Game Notes

  • Jackson State has opened conference play with four consecutive wins for the first time under head coach Mo Williams, and the first time since 2020-21 when it finished 11-0 in the regular season.
  • Mansel was named the SWAC Impact Player of the Week after leading Jackson State to a pair of wins this week over Alabama State and Alabama A&M to stay perfect in the conference standings through the first three games. The graduate student scored 23 points and grabbed five rebounds in a triple overtime victory over Alabama A&M, dishing out three assists and recording four steals. He added 14 points and nine rebounds to go along with five assists and three blocks in the first game of the week against Alabama State.
  • Ruffin and Hunt are two individuals that the Tigers want to get to the free throw line in conference play. The two are combined 88.9 [48-of-54] percent from the line for the first four games.
  • The triple overtime game against Alabama A&M on Monday night is the longest game under head coach Mo Williams for Jackson State this season and in his three years at the helm.
  • Jackson State has had 11 different players score in double figures 47 times in 17 games this season.
