Tigers open SWAC play on the road at Alcorn State

JACKSON, Miss. | After 13 consecutive non-conference road games to open the 2024 season, Jackson State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday afternoon on the road against Alcorn State.

The game is set to tip at 2:30 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex and will be broadcast on HBCUGO.

Jackson State, who played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, returns to the court after a week off following its final non-conference game at Cal Baptist. The Tigers lead the series (since 1977) over Alcorn State 51-48, with the Braves winning the last meeting 87-73 in overtime last February.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 12.7 points per game after scoring 20 points in the loss to Cal Baptist in his first game in 23 days. Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 35.2 (45-of-128) percent from the floor and 34.7 (25-of-72) percent from beyond the arc, and Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.0 points per game while shooting 38.4 (48-of-125) percent from the floor and 34.5 (19-of-55) percent from beyond the arc.

Ruffin and McMillian earned Player of the Week honors his week from the conference office after their performances against Cal Baptist on the road. Ruffin earned Impact Player of the Week following his 20-point performance, while McMillian earned Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after his 20-point performance in the same game.

Jackson State has started nine different lineups in 13 games this season, with only two of those lineups appearing in multiple games.

At one point this season, Jackson State had played the third-toughest schedule in the country after facing three top-10 teams (at the time), they enter conference play having played the 35th-toughest schedule in the nation and the toughest in the conference.

Nine different players have scored in double figures this season for the Tigers who are led by McMillian (eight times), Mitchell (seven times), and Shannon Grant (four times). Grant has also posted a pair of double-doubles this season.
