Jackson State returns home, faces Bethune-Cookman on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State returns home for a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contests beginning with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams AAC.

The game tips at 3 p.m. and will be carried on the SWAC Digital Network.

Jackson State (4-1 in conference) in a three-way tie for second place behind Southern entering the weekend. They are tied in the standings with Texas Southern and Bethune-Cookman after falling Houston on Monday afternoon, a game that was moved up four hours due to winter weather impacting the Houston area. The  meeting between Jackson State and the Wildcats on Saturday is the first of two this season between the two schools.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 14.8 points per game after scoring in double figures in seven of eight games he has played this season. He is shooting 31.4 (37-of-118) percent from the floor and 25.6 (10-of-39) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 91.9 (34-of-37) percent from the free throw line. Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 35.9 (60-of-167) percent from the floor and 38.0 (38-of-100) percent from beyond the arc, and Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.6 points per game while shooting 40.7 (68-of-167) percent from the floor and 41.3 (33-of-80) percent from beyond the arc. 

Romelle Mansel is averaging 9.5 points per game and 7.1 rebounds for the Tigers after missing the Monday game.

Game Notes

  • Jackson State opened conference play with four consecutive wins for the first time under head coach Mo Williams, and the first time since 2020-21 when it finished 11-0 in the regular season.
  • Ruffin and Keiveon Hunt are two individuals that the Tigers want to get to the free throw line in conference play. The two are combined 88.1 [52-of-59] percent from the line for the first four games.
  • The triple overtime game against Alabama A&M last week is the longest game under head coach Mo Williams for Jackson State this season and in his three years at the helm.
  • Jackson State has had 11 different players score in double figures 51 times in 18 games this season.
  • Mansel missed the Texas Southern game after leaving the game against Prairie View A&M early last Saturday, but is expected to play on Saturday agaiinst the Wildcats.
