Tigers face Florida A&M to close out homestand

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State closes out its homestand on Monday night, facing Florida A&M in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contests with the conference season closing in on the midpoint of the season.

The game tips at 7 p.m. and will be carried on the JSU Sports Network.

Jackson State (5-1 in conference) is tied with Texas Southern in the conference standings just one game back of Southern. Meanwhile, Florida A&M has won its last three games and sits two games back of Jackson State and Texas Southern in the standings. The meeting is the first of two this season between the two schools.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 17.2 points per game after scoring in double figures in eight of nine games he has played this season. He is shooting 35.0 (49-of-140) percent from the floor and 31.3 (15-of-48) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 89.4 (42-of-47) percent from the free throw line. Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 35.8 (62-of-173) percent from the floor and 37.7 (40-of-106) percent from beyond the arc, and Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.5 points per game while shooting 41.0 (71-of-173) percent from the floor and 40.2 (33-of-82) percent from beyond the arc. 

Romelle Mansel is averaging 9.9 points per game and 7.1 rebounds for the Tigers.

  • Shannon Grant, averaging 7.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this season, hits the floor to face his former team since transferring in the offseason as a graduate. He averaged double figures last season for Florida A&M.
  • Ruffin scored a career-high 37 points against Bethune-Cookman in the Tigers' last game, it is the second-most points scored in a game this season only behind Doctor Bradley of UAPB who poured in 39 against Alabama A&M.
