Jackson State and Alcorn State Battle to Scoreless Draw in SWAC Rivalry

Jackson, Miss.| The Jackson State women's soccer team played Alcorn State to a 0–0 draw Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Complex.

The Tigers dominated possession and offensive chances throughout, outshooting the Braves 19–11 and holding a 12–7 advantage in shots on goal. Despite the relentless pressure, JSU was unable to find the back of the net, while goalkeeper Taylor Osborn turned in another strong performance to preserve the clean sheet.

How It Happened
Jackson State (6–6–3, 5–1–1 SWAC) controlled the tempo from kickoff, firing 10 first-half shots and forcing Alcorn keeper Maria Heuman into eight saves before halftime. Makayla DayAlayla Jackson, and Kaila Tablado led the early attack, combining for several shots on target that tested the Alcorn defense.

In the second half, JSU continued to press, led by Sarah Portis, who recorded a team-high four shots, three of them on goal. Zaniyah Gonzague and Malayah Nuestro each added attempts that narrowly missed converting in the final 15 minutes.

Osborn anchored the defense with seven saves, including five in the second half, to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Jackson State's back line, featuring Gonzague, Portis, and Jaelyn Greer, limited Alcorn's high-percentage looks and cleared multiple late corner kicks.

"We played as well as we can play without winning," stated head coach Ted Flogaites. "I thought we dominated a lot of phases of the match without ever hitting top cylinder and that's the problem. We can solve it. I think the instance of futbol that led to Dezire getting in on goal was futbol of the highest order and we should have kept with that type of stylistic play since we are good enough to repeat it consistently.

Credit to Alcorn they have a very good team and I thought we one hundred percent deserved more from the match but it's on us to make that happen."
