LAS VEGAS | No. 11 Jackson State's fourth quarterback ended up short as Grambling State connected on a field goal with just 21 seconds remaining, as the Tigers fell 26-24 to Grambling State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night.
JaCobian Morgan, who was injured late in the first quarter and did not return, scored the game's first touchdown on a seven-yard rush around left end before the Tigers extended the lead to 10-0 on a 30-yard Donovan Warren field goal. However, Grambling State got on the board with a 59-yard touchdown pass with just under two minutes to play before converting a blocked punt into a field goal as the first half clock expired to pull within 10-9. In the second half, Grambling State (5-3, 2-2 SWAC) scored 13 unanswered points before Jackson State (5-2, 3-1 SWAC) used a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to take a 24-23 lead with just 2:15 to play before Grambling State connected on a last second 44-yard field goal.
Donerio Davenport led a Jackson State rushing attack with 98 yards on 11 carries as the Tigers rushed for 198 as a team. Meanwhile, a trio of Tigers finished the night 13-of-26 passing for 250 yards and a touchdown. Parker Stofa came off the bench to finish 7-of-12 for 91 yards, and Jared Lockhart finished 3-of-8 for 96 yards and a touchdown. Nate Rembert led all receivers with four catches for 126 yards a touchdown, while Ja'Naylon Dupree finished with three receptions for 61 yards.Â
Defensively, Reid Pulliam led Jackson State with 10 tackles, while John Brown Jr. finished with six.
Jackson State still controls its destiny in the SWAC East Division with four games remaining.
