Jackson, Miss.| The Jackson State volleyball team continued its dominant conference run Sunday afternoon, sweeping in-state rival Alcorn State 3–0 (25–18, 25–19, 25–10) inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
With the victory, the Tigers improved to 9–11 overall and 8–2 in SWAC play, while Alcorn dropped to 2–20 and 1–8 in the league.
Inside the Numbers
Jackson State maintained control throughout, recording 39 kills, 10 service aces, and 12 total blocks while limiting Alcorn to just .028 hitting for the match.
Middle blocker
Makenzie Washington led the attack with nine kills on .583 hitting and three total blocks, while
Jayden James added 12 kills, five digs, and two service aces.
Kamiera Watkins contributed all-around with four kills, two aces, and four total blocks.
Setters
Naija Gadis (14 assists, three aces) and
Karys Dove (16 assists, three aces) orchestrated a balanced offense that saw five players record multiple kills.
Cierra Gilbert and
Katejion Robinson combined for seven total blocks, providing consistent defensive pressure at the net.
Giannelle Asomani led the back row with eight digs, while
Kymorah Carter added five more.
How It Happened
- After a slow start, trailing 2–0 early, Jackson State took control midway through the frame.
- Kyra Dove and James powered the offense with consecutive kills, while Watkins and Robinson combined for three key blocks.
- Naija Gadis served an ace to cap a 5–0 run that gave JSU a 14–8 lead.
- Washington and James each added late kills, and the set ended 25–18 on a James finish from Gadis.
- Alcorn came out strong with a 4–0 lead, but JSU responded quickly behind Washington's consistency in the middle.
- The Tigers posted three service aces in the set — two from Gadis — and used a 7–1 run to go up 15–12.
- James and Washington combined for 11 kills in the frame, while Watkins and Gilbert each tallied blocks to hold off the Braves' push.
- James sealed the set with a cross-court winner, putting JSU ahead 2–0.
- Jackson State dominated from start to finish in the final set, hitting a blistering .667 with 14 kills and just two errors.
- Watkins opened the set with an ace, followed by a flurry of kills from Washington, James, and Kyra Dove to build an 11–4 advantage.
- Cierra Gilbert contributed a solo block to extend the lead to double digits, and Mackenzie Moore's first collegiate kill sealed the sweep at 25–10.
