Jackson, Miss| Defender Sarah Portis scored twice and added an assist to lead the Jackson State women's soccer team to a dominant 4–0 victory over Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field. Makayla Day and India Wilson also notched their first collegiate goals in the match.
How It Happened
Jackson State (5–5–2, 4–0–0 SWAC) controlled the tempo throughout, firing 19 shots and putting 15 on goal while limiting the visiting Panthers to just 10 total attempts.
Four different players contributed to the scoring, and Jackson State's defense recorded its fourth straight conference shutout.
Makayla Day opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, converting a cross from Kianah Farmer to give JSU a 1–0 advantage. Portis then doubled the lead at 42:17 with a well-placed finish from Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper's assist.
After halftime, India Wilson made it 3–0 with her first collegiate goal in the 57th minute, set up by Portis. Eight minutes later, Portis capped off her standout performance with her second goal of the match, assisted by Caylah Williams, to seal the 4–0 win.
Goalkeepers Taylor Osborn (73 minutes, four saves) and Valentina Goodloe (17 minutes, one save) combined for the shutout.
"It's all about the team, and every player working for each other. I thought our players were a total credit to the jersey today, and a clean sheet against a really hard-working PVAMU is just reward for our work," head coach Ted Flogaites stated. "India Wilson and Makayla Day scored their first collegiate goals of their careers as Tigers, and we are fired up for them. Portis scored two by just getting deep into the box in dangerous spots, and I don't think she put a foot wrong all day. The team and defensive line deserve huge credit for a fifth consecutive shutout, dating back to the Nicholls match, roughly 459 scoreless minutes (since we conceded at Jacksonville). We had a cutting edge to our attack in the final third, and arrived in dangerous spaces. I thought our ideas about how to play and solve problems are improving, and our soccer IQ was on display in the second half. I'm happy for the players; they put in a huge volume of work this weekend. Valentina's save to preserve the shutout was huge."
