Game 7 Preview: Jackson State hits the road to face Louisiana on Friday

LAFAYETTE, La. | Jackson State hits the road the day after Thanksgiving to face Louisiana on Friday night at the CajunDome, its first game since a Sunday night game inside the Lee E. Williams AAC.

The game tips at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

This will be the seventh meeting between the two schools, with the series tied at 3-all. Although Louisiana won the first two games in the series, Jackson State has won three of their last four including the last time the two teams met on Nov. 7, 2021 [75-70]. Jayme Mitchell Jr. leads the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game and has scored in double figures in four of the team's six games this season.. Meanwhile, Daeshun Ruffin is averaging 12.4 points and 3.0 assists per game and Dorian McMillian is averaging 12.2 points per game through the first six games.

Tamarion Hoover is also averaging double figures at 10.3 per game after a 19-point performance on the road at Arkansas.

Meanwhile, Louisiana (1-6) is led by Jamyron Keller at 17.0 points per game, while Jaxon Olvera is averaging 12.1 points per game and Dorian Finister at 12.0 per game. The Ragin' Cajuns have lost five consecutive games since a win over Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 7.

Game Notes

  • Jackson State played four of its first five games of the season against nationally-ranked teams on the road including Illinois, Louisville, Auburn, and Arkansas.
  • Today's trip will mark the second into the state of Louisiana for Jackson State early this season after dropping a 68-51 contest at Louisiana Tech [Nov. 15].
  • Ruffin was named the SWAC Impact Player of the Week for the first week of the season after he averaged 17.0 points per game in the two games of the season against No. 14/17 Illinois and No. 10/11 Louisville on the road. 
  • Delyle Williams got his first start of the year with Ruffin missing the Winthrop game [11.23]. 
  • The Tigers return a pair of starters from last season in Ruffin and McMillian who earned Freshman of the Year honors last season. He returns as a Preseason Second-Team selection, while Ruffin returns as the top scorer in the conference and was named Preseason Player of the Year.
  • Head coach Mo Williams will have two sons on the bench [at least at some point this season] with his son KyDarrius serving as a an assistant coach, while another of his sons - Mike - comes in as a highly-touted recruit from Gernantown High School.
  • Mitchell missed his career high in points by just two when he scored 24 points against Auburn on Wednesday, while Ebo Wilson equaled his career-high with eight rebounds.
  • Jackson State has played without Jalen Tatum [missed four games], Keiveon Hunt [missed all six games], Dionjahe Thomas [missed all six games], Mike Williams [three games], Raevon Thomas [missed all six games], and Ruffin [one game].
  • The home game against Winthrop was the first non-conference home game in seven years.
  • Jackson State will have traveled 4,202 miles round trip following its first five road games this season.
