DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Shannon Grant paced five Jackson State players in double figures with a season-high leading Jackson State to an 84-71 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium on Monday night.
Grant finished with a season-high 20 points connecting on 9-of-11 shots from the floor, and Jayme Mitchell Jr. came off the bench to add 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor including a pair of three-pointers and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Dorian McMillian added 19 points and eight renounds, and Keiveon Hunt added 10 points and four assists.
Romelle Mansel just missed a double-double with 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Jackson State (9-17, 9-4 SWAC) led for nearly 39 minutes of the game and did not allow Bethune-Cookman any closer than five points until the final three minutes of the game. After Bethune-Cookman pulled to within three at 69-66, Mitchell ignited a 13-0 run with a corner three-pointer to pull away in the final minute of the game.
The Tigers finished the night shooting 51.7 (30-of-58) percent from the floor and 29.4 (5-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 70.4 (19-of-27) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman finished the night shooting 50.0 (28-of-56) percent from the floor and 23.5 (4-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 84.6 (11-of-13) percent from the free throw line.

Jackson State ended the first half shooting 50.0 (16-of-32) percent from the floor and 33.3 (4-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 71.4 (5-of-7) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman shot 58.3 (14-of-24) percent from the floor and 37.5 (3-of-8) percent from beyond the arc in the opening half. They also shot 80.0 (4-of-5) percent from the free throw line.
The Tigers grabbed the first half lead on the first possession and never trailed in the opening half, leading by as many as 14 (32-18) with 8:09 to play in the first half. They were shooting 68.4 percent from the floor during that stretch.
The Tigers finished the second half shooting 53.8 (14-of-26) percent from the floor and 20.0 (1-of-5) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 70.0 (14-of-20) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman shot 43.8 (14-of-32) percent from the floor and 11.1 (1-of-9) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 87.5 (7-of-8) percent from the free throw line.
Game Notes
- The Tigers started the same lineup for the eighth consecutive game.
- Dylan Canoville returned to his home state of Florida for the first and only time this season this week against Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.
- Jackson State had five players in double figures, the third time in four games they have had at least five in double figures (Mississippi Valley State and UAPB).
