Jackson State to host Alcorn State on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State returns home for its final home stand of the season beginning with Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action inside the Lee E. Williams AAC.

The game will tip off at 3 p.m. on the SWAC Digital Network. Jackson State (9-17, 9-4 SWAC) sits in a tie for second place with Florida A&M with just five games remaining on the schedule, three games behind conference-leading Southern. They are also a game up on four teams in the standings - Alabama State, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, and Texas Southern. 

The meeting between the two will be the second of the season after Jackson State opened up conference play with a win on the road over Alcorn State (8-17, 8-5 SWAC).

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 15.3 points per game after scoring in double figures in 14 of the 16 games he has played this season. He is shooting 36.5 (76-of-208) percent from the floor and 28.6 (20-of-70) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 83.9 (63-of-87) percent from the free throw line. Dorian McMillian is averaging 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 43.4 (102-of-235) percent from the floor and 38.9 (44-of-113) percent from beyond the arc, and Jayme Mitchell Jr., who returned against Florida A&M after missing the previous three games, is averaging 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 36.1 (73-of-202) percent from the floor and 35.7 (45-of-126) percent from beyond the arc.

Romelle Mansel is averaging 9.4 points per game and 6.7 rebounds for the Tigers, and Shannon Grant is averaging 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Game Notes

  • Four of the top 10 scoring outputs for Jackson State under head coach Mo Williams have come this season including the last three against Southern (89), Mississippi Valley State (92), and UAPB (94).
  • Jackson State scored 90-plus points in back-to-back games inside the Lee E. Williams AAC last weekend, with all three games taking place in conference play at home. Jackson State averaged 91.7 points during that span, while they averaged 77.1 in the previous eight games in conference play.
  • Ruffin leads the team in scoring this season but isn't eligible at this point to appear in the SWAC or NCAA rankings. If her was eligible, Ruffin would be second in the conference in scoring (15.3) and third in assists (4.1). 
  • Jackson State had six players score in double figures in a two-point overtime loss to Southern and followed it up with six more against MVSU.
