Jackson State to close out home portion of schedule beginning with Texas Southern on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State closes the home portion of its regular season schedule with a pair of games in three days beginning with Texas Southern at the Lee E. Williams AAC on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day.

The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip-off on the SWAC Digital Network.

Jackson State (10-17, 10-4 SWAC) and Texas Southern (13-15, 10-5 SWAC) met earlier this season with Texas Southern winning 81-73 in Houston, a game that Jackson State played without Romelle Mansel. The two teams find themselves in a six-team race for the second seed in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament with four games remaining on the schedule in the regular season for Jackson State and three for Texas Southern.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 15.0 points per game after scoring in double figures in 15 of the 17 games he has played this season. He is shooting 36.9 (79-of-214) percent from the floor and 28.2 (20-of-71) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 84.6 (77-of-91) percent from the free throw line. Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 42.4 (103-of-243) percent from the floor and 37.6 (44-of-117) percent from beyond the arc, and Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 10.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 35.6 (74-of-208) percent from the floor and 37.6 (46-of-131) percent from beyond the arc.

Shannon Grant is averaging 9.9 points per game after his 25-point performance against Alcorn State, and Mansel is averaging 9.4 points per game and 6.8 rebounds for the Tigers.

  • Although the Tigers played just one game, Grant had a career day to help Jackson State take over sole possession of second place in the SWAC. He finished with a career-high 25 points on 11-of-11 shooting from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds, dished out a pair of assists, and blocked four shots on his way to being named the HBCU+ Player of the Week and BoxToRow HBCU National Player of the Week. Over the last five games, Grant is averaging 17.2 points per game and is shooting 84.4 (38-of-45) percent from the floor in helping Jackson State to a 4-1 record over that span.
  • Ruffin leads the team in scoring (15.0) and assists (4.2) this season.
  • A trio of Jackson State freshmen have combined to score 413 points, led by McMillian (293). The trio have combined to score 21.6 of the Tigers' points this season.
