JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State returns home for a pair of games at the Lee E. Williams AAC beginning Saturday afternoon against Mississippi Valley State looking to bounce back in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.

Jackson State (6-16, 6-3 SWAC) looks to keep pace with Southern, who the Tigers dropped an overtime game to on Monday, in the conference standings and enter tied with Bethune-Cookman and just one game back of second-place Texas Southern. The game tips at 3 p.m. and will be carried on the SWAC Digital Network.

The Tigers have three players averaging double figures and are led by Daeshun Ruffin at 17.3 points per game after scoring in double figures in 11 of the 12 games he has played this season. He is shooting 36.5 (65-of-178) percent from the floor and 29.8 (17-of-57) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 85.9 (61-of-71) percent from the free throw line. Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 41.0 (82-of-200) percent from the floor and 37.0 (34-of-92) percent from beyond the arc, and Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 10.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 36.0 (67-of-186) percent from the floor and 37.4 (43-of-115) percent from beyond the arc.

Romelle Mansel is averaging 9.8 points per game and 6.9 rebounds for the Tigers.

  • Ruffin was named the co-Player and co-Newcomer of the Week this week by the conference after he finished the week shooting 53.8 (14-of-26) percent from the floor and 33.3 (2-of-6) percent from beyond in the arc against Grambling State and Southern. He also finished the week shooting 81.3 (13-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while also averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. The junior recorded his first double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds against Southern.
  • Today's meeting will be the first of two within three weeks of each other, with the two closing out the regular season.
  • The Tigers had six players score in double figures in an overtime loss to Southern, the most under head coach Mo Williams. The overtime game was the second of the season for Jackson - the other was a three-overtime victory over Alabama A&M.
  • Jackson State has had 11 different players score in double figures 67 times in 22 games this season.
