JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team took a 3-1 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to an 8-2 victory over Alcorn State to close out the River City Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Sofia Gonzalez (2-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, allowing three walks and striking out two. Brooklyn Morris also made an impact in the circle for the Tigers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 1-0, Jackson State (4-0) first put runs on the board in the first inning.
- Alcorn State failed to push any runs across before the Tigers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning.
- JSU picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from freshman Jace Jackson, which brought the Tigers lead to 5-1.
- The Tigers kept Alcorn State without a run before building their lead to 6-1 the following inning.
- Jackson State held the Braves without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning.
- Meah Almaraz crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Tigers, bringing the Jackson State advantage to 7-1.
- Alcorn State got within 7-2 until the Tigers scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 8-2.
- Gabrielle Willis came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
- The score remained 8-2 for the rest of the game, as the Tigers coasted to the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Tigers power output was led by Almaraz, who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
- Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed three runs across.
- JSU grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
- The Tigers out-hit the Braves at a 5-4 clip.
- Jackson State went 3-for-10 (.300) with runners in scoring position.
- JSU's pitchers limited Alcorn State to just 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and faced 29 Alcorn State hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out five.
- The Tigers drew eight walks from Alcorn State pitching.
- Almaraz led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
- Alcorn State was led offensively by freshman Ka'Miya Dillon, who went 2-for-2.
- TaNiyah Fletcher led the Lady Braves pitching staff, throwing four innings of two-run ball.

The Tigers will travel to Covington, Ga. to compete in the HBCU Invitational. JSU will open the tournament with Hampton and Coppin State at 12 pm and 2 pm.
