Tigers celebrate Senior Day with win over Texas Southern

JACKSON, Miss. | Romelle Mansel recorded a double-double on Senior Day to help Jackson State defeat Texas Southern 67-52 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play at the Lee E. Williams AAC on Saturday evening.

Mansel finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, finishing the day 5-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Jayme Mitchell Jr. came off the bench to lead the team with 19 points including hitting all six free throws, and Shannon Grant added 16 points and nine rebounds. Daeshun Ruffin added 13 points and four assists in the victory.

Jackson State finished the night shooting 34.4 (22-of-64) percent from the floor and 17.4 (4-of-23) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 86.4 (19-of-22) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Texas Southern finished the night shooting 31.8 (21-of-66) percent from the floor and 12.5 (4-of-32) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 85.7 (6-of-7) percent from the free throw line.

Inside the Numbers
Jackson State finished the first half shooting 28.6 (10-of-35) percent from the floor and 21.1 (4-of-19) percent from beyond the arc to take a 10-point lead into intermission. They also shot 77.8 (7-of-9) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Texas Southern finished the first half shooting 27.6 (8-of-29) percent from the floor and 25.0 (4-of-16) percent from beyond the arc. They also made just one free throw in the first half.

The Tigers shot 41.4 (12-of-29) percent from the floor in the second half including missing all four of its three-pointers. They also shot 92.3 (12-of-13) prcent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Texas Southern shot 35.1 (13-of-37) percent from the floor including missing all 16 of its three-pointers in the second half. They also connected on all five free throws.

Jackson State forced Texas Southern into 17 turnovers and outrebounded the Tigers 50-41.
