McMillian named SWAC Freshman of the Year, Grant named Second Team All-SWAC

ATLANTA, Ga. | Jackson State freshman guard Dorian McMillian was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Freshman of the Year and Shannon Grant was named Second Team All-Conference, announced by the conference on Monday night.

McMillian scored in double figures 16 times, including three 20-point performances with a career-high 23 against Alabama State this season. He recorded five or more rebounds 12 times and entered the week of the regular season ranked 17th in the conference in scoring at 10.72 points per game and 10th in defensive rebounds from his guard position. McMillian was 12th in the conference in three-point field goals made (1.62), and hit seven three-pointers against Alabama State which is tied for the second-highest total in a single game this season in the SWAC. The Pascagoula native was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week two times.

Meanwhile, Grant scored in double figures 16 times and grabbed seven or more rebounds 10 times, while blocking two or more shots seven times. The graduate student finished the regular season in the top 25 in scoring and 13th in the conference in rebounding including 76 offensive. He finished eighth in the conference in blocked shots, and second in the conference in offensive rebounding. Grant finished the year shooting 61.9 percent from the field and recorded a career-best day going 11-for-11 against Alcorn State, the best shooting performance in the conference this season. He recorded three double-doubles and had three 20-point performances. Grant was named BOXTOROW National Player of the Week, HBCU+ National Player of the Week, and was named SWAC Impact Player of the Week two times. He had a string of 10 games from Jan. 27 to March 3 where he scored in double figures nine times and averaged 15.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocked shots per game, while also shooting 72.3 (68-of-94) percent from the floor. He ended the regular season with 24 points and 11 rebounds against Mississippi Valley State.

Jackson State opens play in the 2025 Starry SWAC Men's Basketball Tournaments presented by Buick on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. (ET) as the No. 2 seed and will face the winner of Tuesday night's game between No. 7 Florida A&M and No. 10 Prairie View A&M.
