ATLANTA, Ga.| The Jackson State women's basketball fell just short in the SWAC semifinal matchup to Southern, 51-47 at The Gateway Center Arena Friday evening.
Zoe Cooper grabbed 10 rebounds and added six points and two steals for the Tigers. Taleah Dilworth helped out with 13 points and two steals and Jaileyah Cotton chipped in with 13 points.
Led by Cooper's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense held Southern shooters to just 33.3 percent from the field. The Tigers also kept Aniya Gourdine to 4-of-17 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (16-15) went on a 7-0 run with 2:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jakiylah Esco, to take a 17-13 lead to open the game.
- The Tigers lost some of its lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-15 advantage.
- JSU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
- Southern rallied to take a 22-18 lead before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run starting at the 2:00 mark in the second period to take a 23-22 lead.
- The Jaguars then came roaring back to take a 24-23 lead heading into halftime
- Jackson State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 40-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
- JSU knocked down one three-pointer in the quarter to score three of its five total points.
- The Tigers came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 40-35 with 7:42 to go in the contest.
- Jackson State kept their comeback going, but Southern managed to hold on for the 51-47 win.
