Jackson State falls 5-4 to Bethune-Cookman despite late lead

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 5-4 to Bethune-Cookman Saturday.

Sofia Gonzalez (4-3) got the ball to start for Jackson State and took the loss.

In the batter's box, the Tigers were led by Jace Jackson, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double and a walk. Mari Stephens put together a decent performance at the plate as well,  finishing with two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State (11-9, 1-1 SWAC) trailed 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. 
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
  • The game remained tied until the third inning, when the Tigers got going again on offense.
  • JSU managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the Tigers lead to 3-1.
  • Jackson State's lead had disappeared by the time the seventh inning came around and turned into a 5-3 Bethune-Cookman advantage, when JSU cut that deficit to 5-4. The Tigers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jace Jackson led the Tigers, going 3-for-3 with a double.
  • Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed two runs across.
  • Gipson stole three bases in Saturday's game.
  • JSU's pitchers faced 34 Bethune-Cookman hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and eight fly balls.
  • The Tigers drew four walks from Bethune-Cookman pitching.
  • Bethune-Cookman was led offensively by freshman Shania Owens, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Alysa Lopez led the Wildcats pitching staff, throwing six innings of three-run ball.

The Tigers will open a three-game weekend series at Mississippi Valley State beginning Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
