DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| The Jackson State softball team took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-1 victory against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon.
Jorgina Gant (7-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The freshman went seven innings, giving up one run on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
Offensively, the Tigers were led by Jace Jackson, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Mari Stephens compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Beija Allen also contributed for Jackson State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State (24-21, 14-8 SWAC) got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning.
- The Tigers got an RBI single from freshman Ariana Murillo, scoring Valerie Joaquin from second base
- The Wildcats failed to push any runs across before the Tigers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning.
- Jackson State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Allen, which brought the Tigers lead to 2-0.
- JSU kept Bethune-Cookman scoreless before building their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning.
- The Tigers pushed two runs across on a two-run double from Jackson that brought home Ka'Liyah Gipson and Stephens.
- B-CU fought back, closing the gap to 4-1 until Jackson State added some insurance in the sixth.
- The Tigers scored twice, with one run coming across on Stephens' 2-out single, bringing the Jackson State advantage to 6-1.
- The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as the Tigers coasted to the win.
