JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State won its seventh consecutive game on Wednesday night, using an eight-run fifth inning before holding off New Orleans for a 15-14 victory at Braddy Field.
Jackson State (24-17) jumped out early with a 5-2 lead before New Orleans came back to take a one-lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning where the Tigers answered with eight of their own to grab the lead back (13-6). However, New Orleans battled back to have the go-ahead at the plate in the top of the ninth inning with no outs before Eric Elliott recorded his first save of the season by striking out three consecutive batters to end the game.
The Tigers pounded out 16 hits against seven New Orleans (23-20) pitchers including five players picking up multiple hits in the win. Hederick Torres finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI - and double - before leaving late in the contest, while Arjun Huerta finished 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI with a double. Jordan McCladdie finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a double, and four stolen bases - giving him 39 on the season.
Joseph Eichelberger finished 2-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, and Tyshon Patty 2-for-5 with a run scored, a pair of RBI, and a double.
JeAndrick Lourens (1-3) picked up the win in relief working 2.0 innings and allowed four runs - all unearned - on a pair of hits, replacing starter Carson Foster who logged 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on three hits.
