Tigers shutout Southern in game two, claim SWAC series

JACKSON, Miss. | Three pitchers combined to scatter five hits as Jackson State shutout Southern 8-0 in game two of its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series at Braddy Field on Friday afternoon.

Jackson State (29-19, 16-12 SWAC) clinched its third consecutive SWAC home series and fourth in the last five series behind the arm of Brandon Haston (4-7) who picked up win in the start working 6.0 innings and allowing just three hits with three strikeouts. Nkosi Didder worked a two-hit seventh innng stranding the bases loaded, and JeAndrick Lourens worked the final 2.0 innings of hitless relief using just eight pitches to get out of the eighth inning.

The Tigers pounded out 10 hits led by Pierre Cabral who finished 3-for-4  with an RBI, and Wilbert Perez who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and an run scored. Darwin Gregg provided the power on Friday with a 422-foot blast in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach, while Jordan McCladdie stole his 47th base later in the game.

  • 1st inning - Perez singled to center field, RBI (0-0); Robert Tate Jr. scored. Cabral singled to right center, RBI (2-0 BB); Joseph Eichelberger advanced to second; Perez scored. Hederick Torres reached on a fielding error by ss, RBI; Ledy Alvarez advanced to second; Cabral advanced to third; Eichelberger scored, Jackson State 3-0.
  • 6th inning - Gregg homered to center field, RBI (0-2 SF). Perez singled up the middle, RBI (1-1 FB); Tyshon Patty scored, unearned, Jackson State 5-0.
  • 8th inning - McCladdie reached on a fielding error by 1b, RBI; Tate advanced to third; Patty scored. Eichelberger grounded out to c, RBI (2-2 BSBS); Perez advanced to second; McCladdie advanced to third; Tate scored, unearned. Perez advanced to third on a wild pitch; McCladdie scored on a wild pitch, unearned, Jackson State 8-0.
