OPENING KICK

  • Jackson State and Tuskegee have met three times in school history, including twice in Jackson. The Tigers won the first two meetings in the series before Tuskegee was able to pull out a win the last time the two teams met in 2017 [Mobile, Ala.].
  • Ahmad Miller turned in the second-best rushing performance of the season against Hampton in the season opener with 180 yards against Hampton. He was even with Joshua Dye of Southern Utah, while Eastern Illinois quarterback Cole LaCrue rushed for nation's best 193 yards.
  • The Tigers won a pair of weekly awards from the SWAC with Quincy Ivory earning his second consecutive Newcomer of the Week award, and Gerardo Baeza earning Specialist of the Week after the Southern Miss game.
  • Jackson State continued their success in the red zone from last season, scoring on all three opportunities in the season opener against Hampton and again in their lone attempt against Southern Miss on the road last week. Last season, the Tigers finished second in the nation scoring 96.3 percent of the time - just behind Montana State at 97 percent.
  • Jackson State has scored six touchdowns this season, all on the ground. Ahmad Miller has three of those rushing touchdowns, Emari Matthews two, and Donerio Davenport one through the first two games of the season.
  • 350 days... that was the span between losses for Jackson State following the game at Southern Miss on Saturday [Sept. 6]. Prior to that game, Jackson State last loss on Sept. 21, 2024 on the road before reeling off 10 consecutive victories to close out 2024 and extended the streak to 11 after the 2025 season opener. Although the winning streak may be over for consecutive wins, they maintain the 11-game streak against FCS opponents.
  • Jackson State has won seven consecutive games at home dating back to last season when they finished 6-0.
  • The Tigers have not lost in the W.C. Gorden Classic since the 2019 season winning the last five Classics. Under current head coach T.C. Taylor, Jackson State has won both of those games.
  • The game against Tuskegee will be the first of three against schools from the state of Alabama this season, with two of those coming in Jackson. The Tigers will face Alabama A&M in the Gulf Coast Challenge [Mobile, Ala.] on Oct. 4 and Alabama State for homecoming [Oct. 11].

MORGAN NOT BAD AS A STARTER

  • Quarterback JaCobian Morgan is not bad as a starter after he is finished 10-1 as a starter last season for the Tigers, with his only loss coming against ULM. The graduate student rotated in as the starter the first four games of the season in 2024 before getting the reins following the Grambling State [Sept. 21] contest.
  • Morgan is 14-4 as a starter and has been starting since his freshman season at Syracuse, only the seventh quarterback to start at quarterback for the Orange.

IVORY DOES IT AGAIN, THIS TIME AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS

  • Quincy Ivory, who had a career day in the opener, did it again against Southern Miss in the first road game of the season with 10 total tackles including a pair of solo.
  • He also added another sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss, and he ranks among the nation's best through the first two games of the season. He is ranked third in the nation in sacks, and second in the SWAC, with 1.50 per game. He ranks just behind Ckelby Givens of Southern [1.83] who has played three games.
  • He also ranks fifth in tackles for loss and second in the SWAC behind Logan Wilson of Indiana State [3.00] and Givens [2.83].

BAEZA HITS ON FIRST TWO KICKS OF THE YEAR

  • Gerardo Baeza was perfect against Southern Miss in a 38-20 loss connecting on both field goals and all four extra points. The graduate student connected on all four of his extra points and also hit on both of his field goals - both over 40 yards. He connected on field goals of 46 yards (two yards shy of career long) and from 40 yards.
  • He continues to add to his career mark in extra points, pushing his total to 75 total, all while looking to equal his mark of 22 field goals from a season ago.
