JSU Sweeps Northwestern State to Register First Win

Hattiesburg, Miss.| The Jackson State volleyball team earned its first win of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Northwestern State in straight sets (25–16, 25–19, 25–12) at the Southern Miss Wellness Center to open the Golden Eagle Classic.

Jackson State (1–8) put together one of their most efficient offensive performances of the year, hitting .375 as a team with 41 total kills.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State came out strong, jumping to a 10–2 lead behind kills from Hope Briggs, Kamiera Watkins, and Jayden James.
  • The Tigers controlled the net with five early kills from Briggs and two service aces from Kymorah Carter.
  • Northwestern State tried to rally late, but JSU maintained its cushion to close out the first set by nine point.
  • The second set was tighter, featuring five ties and two lead changes. JSU pulled ahead midway on back-to-back aces from Carter and kills by Watkins and Cierra Gilbert.
  • Briggs and James combined for seven kills in the frame, while the defense, led by Washington and Watkins, added key blocks to keep Northwestern at bay.
  • The Tigers secured the set 25–19 after kills from James and Watkins sealed the finish.
  • Jackson State dominated from the outset, capitalizing on Northwestern State's attack errors while executing efficiently on offense.
  • James sparked the run with multiple kills, and Briggs added three more to push the lead into double digits.
  • JSU finished the sweep with a strong defensive stand, highlighted by blocks from Ryleigh Davis and Gilbert, holding Northwestern to just two kills in the final set.

  • Hope Briggs recorded 13 kills, .526 hitting percentage, and one block assist.
  • Jayden James added another 10 kills, 11 digs, .455 hitting percentage, and an ace
  • Kamiera Watkins finished with eight kills, three block assists, and one ace

  • Kymorah Carter tacked on three service aces, 11 digs, and two assists.

The Tigers will take on the host team, Southern Miss on Saturday in Hattiesburg. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
