Game 16 Preview: Tigers finish off road swing against Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Jackson State continues its two-game Alabama road swing with a contest against Alabama A&M, the two teams will tip at 7 p.m. inside the AAMU Event Center on Monday.

The game is being broadcast on SWACTV.

Jackson State [3-12, 2-0 SWAC] enters the game fresh off an 11-point victory over Alabama State on Saturday night. The two teams have met 40 times since 1963 with Jackson State holding a 31-19 advantage, including winning the last three. This season, the Tigers are led by Daeshun Ruffin in both scoring and assists, averaging 20.2 points [33.5 in conference play] and 4.1 assists per game [6.5 in conference play]. He is joined in double figures by Jayme Mitchell Jr. at 13.2 points [13.0 in conference play] and 3.7 rebounds per game, while Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season.

Game Notes

  • Ruffin is averaging 33.5 points per game through the first two conference games, scoring 30 or more in both games. He is also averaging 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. Meanwhile, Jayme Mitchell Jr. is averaging 13.0 points per game in conference action. 
  • Head coach Mo Williams has two sons on the bench [at least at some point this season] with his son KyDarrius serving as a an assistant coach, while another of his sons - Mike - comes in as a highly-touted recruit from Germantown High School.
  • The match-up is the first since a three-overtime victory by Jackson State in last season's meeting.
  • Tamarion Hoover came off the bench at Alabama State to hit four three-pointers and pour in 16 points off the bench, while Dionjahe Thomas dominated the boards with a season-high 10 rebounds including six offensive.
  • Over the last two games, Jackson State is averaging 82.0 points per game including a season-high 89 against Alcorn State in the conference opener.
  • Jackson State held Louisiana [11.28.25] to 45 points, the lowest point total an opponent has scored since Mississippi Valley State [Feb. 8] was held to 44 in Jackson State win in the lone win of the 2025 season.
  • The game at Houston [seventh] marked the fifth game against a nationally-ranked opponent after Jackson State has faced [ranked at the time] Illinois [17th], Louisville [11th], Auburn [20th], and Arkansas [14th] so far this season. That is the most ranked teams played in the conference. They have also played the second-toughest schedule in the country according to multiple sources.
  • Mike Williams had a career game against Kennesaw State [12.2.25] finishing with a career-high 12 points, earning his first start on the road against Houston. However, he was injured against Hampton [12.18.25], and has not returned to the lineup.
  • Jackson State was picked to finish third in the conference in the preseason behind Bethune-Cookman and Southern. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-4 in the regular season - finishing second - before falling in the SWAC Championship Game.
  • Jackson State has started 12 different lineups in its first 15 games this season, starting the same line-up three times including the same lineup in both conference games.
  • The Tigers are looking to sweep the state of Alabama for the fifth time in the regular season under Williams.
  • Ruffin is closing in on 1,000 career points in the 2025-26 season. After missing non-conference play last season, Ruffin responded with 216 points through 12 non-conference games this season. That total is the second highest total [only trailing 377 total points last season], and has recorded 942 career points [660 at Jackson State]. 
  • A trio of players, Mitchell [656 / 589 at Jackson State] and Raevon Thomas [583], have joined the 500-point club, while McMillian did so in just his second season on Saturday against Alabama State when he scored four points, giving him 503 career points in 49 games.
  • For the fourth straight season under Mo Williams, Jackson State has started off undefeated in conference play with the win over Alabama State, including starting 4-0 last season.
