Game 18 Preview: Tigers close out homestand on Monday night against Texas Southern

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State closes out its homestand on Monday night against Texas Southern on SWACTV with a 7 p.m. tip time.

Jackson State [4-13, 3-1 SWAC] enters the game as the reigning SWAC Player of the Week after averaging 37.5 points per game in a pair of games last week. The two teams have met 106 times since 1977 with Texas Southern holding a 61-45 advantage, however, Jackson State won the last meeting between the two. This season, the Tigers are led by Daeshun Ruffin in both scoring and assists, averaging 21.6 points [32.3 in conference play] and 4.9 assists per game [8.3 in conference play]. He is joined in double figures by Jayme Mitchell Jr. at 12.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while Dorian McMillian is averaging 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season.

Tamarion Hoover has come off the bench to average 10.0 points per game in conference play.

Game Notes

  • Ruffin recorded his first first double-double of the season, and second of his career on the road on Monday night against Alabama A&M. Ruffin finished the night with a career-high 39 points and 10 assists. He finished the night shooting 44.8 (13-of-29) percent from the floor with a pair of three-pointers, and also shot 91.7 (11-of-12) percent from the free throw line. Prior to that game, Ruffin scored 36 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He also added four steals in the win. The senior guard finished the night shooting 45.0 (9-of-20) percent shooting from the floor and connected on 94.7 (18-of-19) percent from the free throw line.  
  • For the week, Ruffin shot 44.9 (22-for-49) percent from the floor with a pair of three-pointers and 93.5 (29-of-31) percent from the free throw line, while averaging 37.5 points per game. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, while dishing out 7.5 assists per game in the road split. He was named the SWAC Player of the Week.
  • Head coach Mo Williams has two sons on the bench [at least at some point this season] with his son KyDarrius serving as a an assistant coach, while another of his sons - Mike - comes in as a highly-touted recruit from Germantown High School.
  • Hoover has come off the bench in conference play averaging 10.0 points a game, while he was averaging 15.5 points per game in a pair of games against Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
  • The Tigers had a pair of players record a double-double against Prairie View A&M in the team's last game, with Ruffin recording his second of the season with 23 points and 10 assists (matching a career-high), while Dionjahe Thomas recorded his first with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The game at Houston [seventh] marked the fifth game against a nationally-ranked opponent after Jackson State has faced [ranked at the time] Illinois [17th], Louisville [11th], Auburn [20th], and Arkansas [14th] so far this season. That is the most ranked teams played in the conference. They have also played the second-toughest schedule in the country according to multiple sources.
  • Jackson State was picked to finish third in the conference in the preseason behind Bethune-Cookman and Southern. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-4 in the regular season - finishing second - before falling in the SWAC Championship Game.
  • Jackson State has started 13 different lineups in its first 17 games this season, starting the same line-up four times including the same lineup in the first three conference games.
  • Ruffin is averaging 21.6 points per game which places among the nation's best this season. In conference play, he is currently averaging 32.3 points per game, scoring 30 or more points in three of the first four conference games. The senior has scored in double figures in eight consecutive games.
