THIBODAUX, La. | The Jackson State men's cross country team earned its first team victory of the season Saturday morning, taking first place at the Nicholls XC Invitational at Nicholls Farm.
The Tigers finished with 16 points as a team, placing six runners among the top 10 scoring finishers.
Ryan Achau led the way for Jackson State, earning his third consecutive individual victory of the season after covering the four-mile course in 20:01.0.
Godfrey Kimutai followed in second with a time of 21:03.9, while
Duncan Koima (21:11.0) and
Collins Kibet (21:22.2) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Newcomer Leon Chirchir narrowly missed the top five, finishing sixth with a time of 21:25.9.
Eric Lagat rounded out the Tigers' top finishers with a ninth-place time of 21:45.5, while junior
Levy Russell III finished 35th overall.
On the women's side, the Lady Tigers finished second as a team, led by sophomore
Lorine Jelagat, who placed 10th overall in the 5K with a time of 20:29.3.
Sophomore
Joan Koech recorded a new personal best, finishing in 20:53.4, while
Amara Hawkins-Quinones posted a season-best time of 21:45.7.
Sya Bolden followed with a 15th-place finish.
Kaylin Jackson and
Kimani Tindal rounded out the Lady Tigers' scoring with respective times of 23:01.6 and 25:40.0.
