Tigers Go Undefeated to Close HBCU Softball Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Jackson State softball team erupted for 11 runs in the third inning and pounded out 17 hits overall to roll to a 17-9 victory over Bluefield State in six innings on Sunday morning.

The Tigers improved behind an offensive onslaught that saw 10 different players record a hit and eight different players drive in at least one run.

How It Happened

  • Bluefield State struck first with a run in the top of the opening frame, but JSU answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning.
  • The Tigers added another run in the second to take a 2-1 lead before breaking the game open in the third.
  • Jackson State sent 15 batters to the plate in the decisive third inning, scoring 11 runs on a barrage of timely hits and aggressive baserunning.
  • Avelina Mclean delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a bases-clearing double as part of her four-RBI performance.
  • The Tigers also capitalized on walks and hit-by-pitches to keep the pressure on, building a commanding 13-1 advantage.
  • Bluefield State responded with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth, but JSU continued to answer.
  • JSU plated one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the 17-9 run-rule victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Courtney Little led the way offensively, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, a triple and a walk, finishing with a 1.000 on-base percentage.
  • Zaria Keyes added two hits and two stolen bases, while Beija Allen went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Meah Almaraz recorded two hits, including a double, and scored three times.
  • Mclean finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a double.
  • In the circle, Madison McDowell (1-0) earned the win after tossing 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one.
  • Addison Jennings worked the final two innings in relief, striking out three.
  • Jackson State finished with 17 runs on 17 hits, while Bluefield State recorded nine runs on nine hits.
  • The Tigers will look to carry the offensive momentum into their next contest as they continue play this weekend.

GAME 2: JSU-9, CLAFLIN-0
Jackson State rode a complete-game shutout from Jorgina Gant and a pair of home runs to a 9-0 win over Claflin on Sunday afternoon to close out the HBCU Softball Classic.

Gant was in command from the start, scattering four hits over 7.0 innings while striking out six and issuing just one walk. The Tigers' defense backed her up all day, and the offense steadily added runs in five different innings to secure the shutout.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State broke through in the second inning when Avelina Mclean drove in G. Willis with an RBI groundout to give JSU a 1-0 lead.
  • The Tigers created separation in the fourth on a big swing from Brooklyn Morris, who launched a two-run homer to center to make it 3-0.
  • JSU kept the pressure on in the fifth, getting an RBI double from Jcae Jackson and an RBI groundout from Willis to extend the advantage to 5-0.
  • In the sixth, Isabella Rivera connected for a solo home run to left, and Aaliysah Gomez added an RBI single as the Tigers pushed the margin to 7-0.
  • Morris capped her standout day in the seventh with a two-RBI double, closing the scoring at 9-0.
Inside the Numbers
  • Offensively, Morris led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in four runs with a homer and a double.
  • Rivera finished with a home run, and Jackson added an RBI double.
  • Jackson State also stayed aggressive on the bases, swiping six stolen bases in the win.
  • Gant pitched seven innings, while allowing four hits, walking one batter, no runs and striking out six in a complete-game shutout.

The Tigers will travel to Hattiesburg to compete in the Eagle Hub City Classic hosted by Southern Miss. JSU will take on Morehead State to open the tournament on Friday. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
