JSU Competes at Eagle Hub City Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 2-1 victory against the Morehead State Eagles on Friday.

Jorgina Gant (3-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.

At the plate, the Tigers were led by Ka'Liyah Gipson, who went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State (8-5) put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Jackson State got an RBI single from Gipson, scoring Ariah Hill from third base.
  • The Eagles then tied the ballgame at one before the Tigers came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning.
  • Zaria Keyes came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State, which brought the Tigers lead to 2-1.
  • The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as Jackson State held on for the win.

At the plate, the Tigers were led by Meah Almaraz, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jackson State (8-6) managed two chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Tigers last got a runner on third in the fifth, when Beija Allen made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out.

The Jackson State Tigers were not able to notch a run against Chattanooga pitcher E. Bales on Saturday and were shut out 8-0 by the Mocs.

J. Rutledge (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Jackson State.

In the batter's box, the Tigers were led by Beija Allen, who went 1-for-2 on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jackson State (8-7) did not advance a runner past second base in the game.
The Tigers went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the fourth, when Karli Cunningan made it into scoring position with two outs.
