Cotton's Double-double Leads JSU Past Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Texas Southern to just 17.4 percent from deep in a 4-for-23 shooting performance on the way to a 65-52 victory against the Tigers on the road Saturday.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Jaileyah Cotton, who had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Derrica McCall tacked on 15 points and four steals and Mikayla Brown helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.

Jackson State's defense held Texas Southern to only 17.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.1 percent from the field.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (11-17, 9-7 SWAC) opened its scoring by going on a 6-0 run with 9:36 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from McCall, to take a 6-2 lead.
  • The JSU Tigers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage.
  • JSU did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
  • Jackson State built that first quarter lead to 26-20 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:09 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from McCall, to increase its lead to 34-20.
  • The JSU Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 42-26 advantage heading into halftime.
  • JSU forced six Texas Southern turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
  • Jackson State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 48-26 with 7:49 to go in the third.
  • Before the conclusion of the third period, the Texas Southern Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the JSU still entered the fourth quarter with a 54-37 edge.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
  • The JSU Tigers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter.
