Tigers Roll Past MVSU to Open Series

JACKSON, Miss. | The Jackson State softball team rolled past Mississippi Valley State to an 8-0 run-rule win on Friday at JSU Softball Field.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (15-14, 7-2 SWAC) struck quickly in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on early pressure to take a 3-0 lead.
  • After Ka'Liyah Gipson reached on an error and later stole second, Jackson State loaded the bases and broke through with Brooklyn Morris delivering a two-run single to center.
  • Beija Allen followed with an RBI single to left to bring home another run and give the Tigers control early.
  • Jackson State added two more runs in the second inning.
  • Gipson singled and stole second before Ariana Murillo drove her in with an RBI single to left.
  • Later in the inning, Gabrielle Willis added an RBI single to right to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • JSU continued to build in the third after Mississippi Valley State committed another error, Gipson came through with an RBI single to center to make it 6-0.
  • Jackson State pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth when Sommer Tyes singled, stole both second and third, and scored on Allen's RBI triple to center.
  • In the fifth and final inning, the Tigers ended it with another three-hit frame as Thenya Kennedy singled in Karli Cunningan to seal the 8-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • At the plate, Jackson State piled up 15 hits.
  • Allen finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Gipson went 2-for-3, scored twice, drove in one and stole two bases.
  • Jace Jackson added two hits and scored once, Willis collected two hits and an RBI, and Morris drove in two.
  • The Tigers also got key contributions from Tyes, Kennedy, Zaria Keyes and Avelina Mclean.
  • In the circle, Gant was outstanding, tossing a five-inning complete-game shutout.
  • She allowed just one hit, struck out six and did not issue a walk as Jackson State improved to 15-14 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
  • Mississippi Valley State dropped to 1-22 overall and 0-10 in league play.
