JSU Earns Series Sweep Over MVSU

JACKSON, Miss.| Jackson State used a big early offensive surge to power past Mississippi Valley State, 9-6, in SWAC action Saturday afternoon at the JSU Softball Field. 
The Tigers plated eight runs over the first two innings and never trailed, collecting 12 hits and drawing seven walks to build a cushion that held up despite a late push from the Delta Devilettes.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State (16-14, 8-2 SWAC) struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on early traffic on the bases. 
  • Jhordan Dyer delivered a two-run double to center to highlight a three-run frame, while Meah Almaraz added a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Tigers broke things open in the second inning with five more runs. 
  • Ariana Murillo drove in two with a single, Almaraz added a two-run double, and Sommer Tyes capped the inning with an RBI triple to make it 8-1. 
  • Mississippi Valley State (1-23, 0-11 SWAC) chipped away throughout the game, scoring in four different innings. 
  • The Delta Devilettes picked up a run in the second on an RBI groundout by Devyn Dotson, then added two more in the third, aided by a Jackson State error and a run-scoring groundout. 
  • Valley's biggest inning came in the fifth when it pushed across three runs to close the gap to 9-6, but the Tigers' pitching staff held the visitors scoreless over the final two frames to secure the win. 
Inside the Numbers
  • Jackson State was led offensively by Meah Almaraz who went 1-for-3, with a double and three RBIs.
  • Jhordan Dyer finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Sommer Tyes finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Zaria Keyes went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases 
  • Brooklyn Morris earned the complete-game victory for Jackson State, allowing six runs (two earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out one. 
  • Mississippi Valley State's Ashtyn Clark took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 12 hits with seven walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work.

Jackson State erupted offensively and cruised to an 18-4 run-rule victory over Mississippi Valley State to earn another series sweep on Saturday afternoon at the JSU Softball Field.
The Tigers put together one of their most complete offensive performances of the season, scoring in every inning and finishing with 15 hits while capitalizing on timely extra-base hits and aggressive baserunning. 
  • Jackson State (15-14, 7-2 SWAC) set the tone early, plating three runs in the first inning before adding two more in the second. 
  • The Tigers continued to apply pressure with single runs in the third and fourth innings and broke the game open late to secure the run-rule win.
  • Jace Jackson delivered one of the biggest swings of the day, ripping a two-RBI triple to center field that helped ignite the Tigers' offense. 
  • Meah Almaraz followed with a double in the same sequence, while Brooklyn Morris added an RBI single to keep the momentum rolling. 
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson also contributed at the plate with an RBI single, and Beija Allen drove in a run as part of a multi-hit effort for the Tigers. 
  • Mississippi Valley State (1-24, 0-12 SWAC) managed four runs on four hits, highlighted by a three-run fourth inning that briefly cut into the deficit. 
  • However, the Devilettes were unable to slow down Jackson State's offense, which continued to produce throughout the game.
  • In the circle, Jackson State pitchers limited Valley to just four hits while working efficiently through five innings. 
  • Defensively, the Tigers committed one error but controlled the game with consistent play behind their pitching staff. 
  • The Tigers' balanced attack and early run production proved to be the difference, as Jackson State secured the series momentum with the dominant win.

The Tigers will travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State on the road. The weekend series begins Friday at 3 p.m.
