Jackson State Blanks Alabama A&M to Open Series

JACKSON, Miss.| Jackson State used timely hitting and a dominant effort in the circle from Jorgina Gant to earn a 6-0 conference win over Alabama A&M on Friday at the JSU Softball Field in Jackson.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (20-18, 12-5 SWAC) struck first in the opening inning when Jace Jackson launched a solo home run to put the Tigers on the board.
  • JSU added two more runs in the second, highlighted by Ariana Murillo's two-run double to left, then stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth on Brooklyn Morris' two-run single.
  • The Tigers added one more insurance run off an Alabama A&M error in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Inside the Numbers
  • Jace Jackson paced the offense with a home run, an RBI, a run scored, and two walks, while Ka'Liyah Gipson set the tone at the top of the lineup by going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
  • Avelina McLean added a 2-for-3 performance with a double and a run scored, Morris drove in two runs, and Murillo finished with a double and two RBI.
  • Jackson State totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.
  • In the circle, Jorgina Gant was outstanding, tossing a complete-game shutout.
  • She allowed just three hits, walked two, and struck out seven across seven innings to improve to 9-4 on the season.
  • Gant worked out of Alabama A&M's best threat in the third and never let the visitors gain momentum, helping seal Jackson State's second shutout of her season.
  • Alabama A&M managed just three hits, with Grace Cruthis, Kali Austerman, and Destiny King each recording one. Kaylee Tatum took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings.
