Tigers Split Doubleheader to Close FAMU Series

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.| The Jackson State struck early and made it stand Saturday, defeating Florida A&M 3-2 in SWAC play.

Game 1: JSU, 3 FAMU, 2

  • The Tigers scored all three runs in the first inning.
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson led off with a single, stole second and later scored on Jace Jackson's RBI triple to center.
  • Jackson then came home on a fielder's choice by Meah Almaraz before Karli Cunningan scored on Gabrielle Willis' sacrifice fly to give JSU a 3-0 lead.
  • Florida A&M answered with two runs in the fourth, but Brooklyn Morris settled in and went the distance in the circle.
Inside the Numbers
  • Morris threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
  • Gipson paced the Tigers at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
  • Jackson added a strong day offensively, going 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Thenya Kennedy and Zaria Keyes also recorded hits for Jackson State, which finished with seven hits and four stolen bases.

Game 2: JSU, 3 FAMU, 11

Jackson State struck first with a three-run opening inning, but Florida A&M answered with a big bottom half and pulled away for an 11-3 decision Saturday at V Wiggins Field. 

How It Happened

  • The Tigers came out aggressive early.
  • Brooklyn Morris worked a walk, Jace Jackson followed with another free pass, and Meah Almaraz loaded the bases with a bunt single.
  • Isabella Rivera delivered the big swing of the inning, driving a two-run double to center field to score Karli Cunningan and Jackson.
  • Almaraz later came home on a wild pitch to give Jackson State a 3-0 lead.
  • Florida A&M responded with six runs in the first and added runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Despite the final score, Jackson State played clean defensively, finishing without an error.

  • Ka'Liyah Gipson, Almaraz, Rivera and Beija Allen each recorded hits for JSU, while Morris reached twice via walks.
