Tigers Fall in Game Two

Montgomery, Ala. | Despite a strong effort in the circle and several bright spots offensively, Jackson State came up short in a 4-0 loss to Alabama State Saturday afternoon..

The Tigers were competitive throughout and actually outhit Alabama State, 6-4, but a combination of missed opportunities and defensive miscues proved to be the difference.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (18-15, 10-3 SWAC) came out aggressive in the opening inning, as Ka'Liyah Gipson set the tone with a leadoff single and a stolen base to move into scoring position.
  • Ariana Murillo followed with a walk, giving the Tigers two runners on with no outs. However, Alabama State worked out of the jam, and that would become a recurring theme.
  • Alabama State (14-26, 8-6 SWAC) capitalized on a tough first inning to take the early lead, scoring an unearned run following defensive miscues.
  • The Hornets added two more runs in the third inning, including an RBI double from Jaibriel Terrell, before extending the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.
  • While the final score reflects a four-run margin, three of Alabama State's runs were unearned.
  • The Tigers left six runners on base and were unable to deliver the timely hit, but their ability to create opportunities and Morris' steady presence in the circle provide positives moving forward.

Inside the Numbers

  • Gipson led Jackson State at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 and consistently putting pressure on the Hornets' defense.
  • Thenya Kennedy, Zaria Keyes, Meah Almaraz, and Brooklyn Morris each added a hit as the Tigers generated traffic on the bases across multiple innings.
  • In the circle, Brooklyn Morris delivered a resilient complete-game performance, allowing just four hits across six innings and held Alabama State to only one earned run.
  • Jackson State's defense, which committed five errors on the day, proved to be the deciding factor.
  • Alabama State pitcher Kohana Pousson turned in a strong outing, tossing a complete-game shutout.
  • Jackson State managed six hits and consistently challenged throughout the game.
