JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State's men's tennis fell to the Delta State Statesmen in a home contest on Tuesday afternoon.
After losing the first match in doubles play, the Tigers rallied back with
Ching Chang Chiu and
Chen Hung-Yu picking up a 6-4 win at number one. Despite a fight from
Fabrizio Fallas and
Gokalp Ayar, the Statesmen defeated the duo with a 6-4 decision, securing the doubles point in the process.
Unfortunately, for the Tigers, injuries began to plague them in singles play, with Fallas and
Federico Pickenstainer suffering injuries that resulted in two more points for the Statesmen. In spite of their backs being against the wall, Jackson State fought back with Chiu securing the first point of the day after a hard-fought 6-3. 7-6 victory. Hung-Yu also responded with victory at number six in a 7-6, 6-3 decision.
The Tigers' rally would fall short in a tight three-set thriller between
Jhoan Vaquero and Juan Diego Alzate. Vaquero won the first set 6-3, while Alzate edged out a 7-6 win in the second. In a must-win final set, Vaquero came just short, falling 6-4 as the Statesmen took a 4-2 road win.
